Apart from how the QI's (Quantum Intelligences) spoke to each other, I enjoyed this deep space thriller. It's a straightforward story of apparent losers who are inadvertently drawn into a deadly situation, and who are then the only ones able to...potentially...save the day.The losers in question are the small crew of an aging asteroid survey ship, sent into the Belt on a multi-year trip to categorize objects. They stumble across a derelict freighter, and the unusual cargo sparks a solar system-wide race and chase as various powers that be strive to secure it. Can the crew prevail, or will they be collateral damage, ants stepped on as elephants dance. Certainly it's a journey of regaining self-respect for one of them, as his personal demons emerge from the black to threaten him and his nascent friends.As I say, apart from the strange, stilted, formal language of the QI's, the characters are well drawn, there are moments of drama, and the outcome of any situation not guaranteed. People die, war is looming, and a long term conspiracy underpins everything occurring. It's set near-future in our timeline, so most of the tech is familiar or a reasonable extrapolation, making it accessible and easy to relate to. The system-wide politics are explored but not in gritty detail, so that does not bog down the action. And the cast is constrained, so it's kept tight and claustrophobic. Indeed, we don't even meet most of the bad guys, they're just voices over the radio, or embodied as a chasing space ship, often with weapons.I haven't checked for a sequel, but if there is one, I'll be buying it.

"I liked it" Actually I liked it very much! Read it in just a couple of sittings and loved the ending 'to be continued '. A little complicated at times for this simple mind... but that is what an imagination is for. I thought I knew what was going to happen as I read but usually I was only half or one quarter right. 😁 I look forward to the next installment. Thanks

So, I think there are really cool concepts in here. I love hard science fiction and I like how its not reverting to the standard sci-fi trope of aliens. However, in my opinion, the story is way too fast, and the prose clunky. I think it would've been better if the world and characters had been fleshed out more and given more context. It felt more like a pilot episode for a sci-fi show than a si-fi book. Plus I bought the physical copy and the first eight pages literally fell out of the book. Unfortunately I will not be buying the second installment.

I truly enjoyed the book. Just the right amount of action; philosophical discussions are proportional to the story baseline and not too verbose. Descriptions of the scenery could be more picturesque, though. To give you a hint: if you liked Dark Matter TV series - you'll love this book. Looking forward to the sequel, of course!

Space opera set in medium future when humans inhabit much of the solar system. A science vessel finds a dead ship adrift in the asteroid belt that contains a prize that could start global war. Good characters, plot moves along steadily, plausible science. Author is still a little green (a few too many cliches) but off to a fine start.

It took awhile to get into the book but, it started to be a page turner. A lot of reviews mention it seems like the Expanse, perhaps because the reviewers had followed the series on TV. Older books used similar technology to travel between the asteroids and planets, so to me the technology is logical to use and the story is different.

Good character development & evolutionary to the story plot. A few "slow" points, which most books have, but enough intrigue to continue reading to the end.

Well written, this will be a series that I will follow. There were a few editing issues, leavers instead of levers, apostrophe misuse, but overall a very readable and engaging adventure.
