On the face of it, the Evolution of Useful Things simply lists fun trivia about familiar objects. Why does a fork have four tines and not two or three? What's a perfect paperclip? Is there such a thing? Who invented the zipper? How many things can you see on your desk right now?However the book gives us much more. Petroski uses a large number of concrete facts to present general laws of human thought and activity. The paper clip appeared because pins used to hold papers together made holes in them and could injure someone looking through files, but it took a while for it to reach the form we know today. We invent new things because we are dissatisfied when we find problems. Form follows not function, but failure.While small objects play the center role here, large machines such as locomotives and large projects such as bridges also come up. Petroski argues that for his concepts to be valid, they must apply to the great as well as the small and he shows that engineers design new bridges or tunnels by solving problems observed found while building other bridges and tunnels.The book's title is especially good. The evolution of man-made things differs fundamentally from the evolution of living things. Natural selection follows a mindless process of sifting through countless minute _random_ changes. Things, however, evolve through a different process of sifting through countless _intended_ changes (sometimes small, somtimes large) until something arises that works better than before.Petroski's writing does annoy me a little; he's got some really bad puns. For example he follows two different quotations of how to manufacture a needle with the phrase "there's more than one way to make a point." Another problem is that he repeats himself. For instance, he twice mentions Karl Marx's astonishment at finding 500 different kinds of hammers in a Birmingham factory.But the originality of his thesis far outweighs these minor flaws. Henry Petroski is a philosopher of engineering examining the question of why we invent things. He asks why we are always perfecting our inventions, why we are never satisfied with our tools as they are. This book held my interest from the first page to the last. I like the logical yet sensible way the author develops his theme (in my opinion) - that there really is no such thing as an original invention. Every so-called invention is actually an improvement on an earlier design and/or a synthesis of multiple design components into a new combination. The examples are simple to understand. All in all, this is a positively fascinating book. I bought this book years ago. The one I bought from Amazon was for a friend. I not only recommend it, I buy it for friends and family.

Mr. Petroski takes that everyday, and tells us the story behind them. His mastery of the subject is evident, and his writing makes it a please to read.

I love all of Petroski's books, and this is no exception. A fantastic look at the design process and how failure governs the advancement of even the most mundane objects. Worth a read for any aspiring engineer, designer, or anyone with a hands-on or technical bent.

Petroski never fails to educate on inventions of everyday life and make these discoveries seem thrilled. Love the book.

This finishes my collection

While it is true that this is a better reference for Sabbat characters than Camarilla, this is not because of wanton sexuality or anything like that. It is a book about discovering yourself through all outlets: pain, thought, suffering, sexuality, sensuality, etc. This is more of a Sabbat outlook than a Camarilla one, so it is more appropriate for those characters.That set aside, it is not really all that helpful a resource. Some of the book was obviously researched, I can tell that from my own studies. However, much of it was merely Lilith bemoaning her fate. Dark Mother indeed. Where is this Mother's self-sufficiency, her self-confidence, her satisfaction at what she is done? Nowhere. It is a book about her whining and using her powers to seduce those she hates until she meets her love, Lucifer.While that is all very interesting, the art is neither detailed nor differentiated. The only really interesting pictures are toward the end, where Lilith is dressed in the outfits of Pharoh, and where she holds Lucifer's sword and prepares to slaughter her enemies. The text is not as poetic as you would be likely to think, if you had read The Book of Nod or The Erciyes Fragments, both of which are wonderful and highly recommended. If you have need of more of that, go ahead and pick this up. If you have players who are Lilins, go ahead and have them pick this up. If you are interested in vampire flavor, this is not really for you. It shuns vampires mainly, and it is not really useful for them.Harkius

Although this book is informative, it gives a biased look at the issues of Megan's Law. The book focuses solely on child molesters and does not talk about the consequences the law has on other sex offenders, like people convicted of statory rape. Opposing Viewpoints Sexual Violence is a much better source for unbiased information.

This book is a very informative book discussing Megan's Law and other laws that protect children. The author also spoke to the investigating officer of the Megan Kanka case, which adds to the credibility of the book. Druss Fodor discusses all sides of the law in an objective manner. A worthy and informative read!

This is a well written book that goes well beyond the patient experience. It's also a great education in healthcare and is about leadership, collaboration, change leadership (e.g. engagement, buy-in, communications), using data appropriately, and customer service. This book helped me as a patient, a caregiver, a leader, and a consultant. My 16-yr old is about to start a new job that is customer facing and I highly recommended he read it! I wish I had read this book 3 years ago!

Dr. Merlino offers great insights into one of the world's leading health care organization's trials and triumphs in transforming its culture to one that is truly patient-centric. His candor in acknowledging and discussing the threats of intimidation and bullying that are all too prevalent in most health care provider organizations makes this book a must-read for all leaders who are serious about improving both staff and patient engagement.

I really wanted to like this book, I bought the zaydo potato “Who is Allah?” one and enjoyed that, but this was a total let down. For one thing, there were many images in it that I didn’t particularly approve of. For eg. his father teaching him how to shave his beard. I understand not all muslim men grow their beard but couldn’t the author have found something else that his father could have taught him? Like playing basketball or tying shoelaces or riding a bike? There were other images as well which I wasnt a huge fan of. The storyline revolved around family which was really nice and sweet (the only reason i’m giving 3 stars) but overall my son didn’t enjoy it much because maybe he couldn’t relate.

We loved the book!!! It's simple enough for children to enjoy and we made a game out of it finding the cat or the potato...we also played guessing game because each page has so many "every day items" that we can learn about clocks, paint, flowers, etc. I read it to them and they were mesmerized with the pictures. Now My daughter wants to read it to her younger brother same as I read it to them with all the fun and games. One of the things I loved best was the focus on the child in the story. Mommy loves ME ..it's reinforcing positive self esteem as you read it, very smart way to introduce this level of behavioral thinking at this age.

I love all the Zaydo Potatos series. It tells story about fundamental concept in fun and beautiful ways.

Cute story , but illustrations are boring, images are not attractive and dull .

I really liked this simple yet powerful message of Allah swts love. Great for the whole family. Three more words ;)

Beautiful, bright and meaningful illustrations, each showing a warm Jewish family celebrating each holiday together, often with extended family or a broader Jewish community. The holidays begin with a young family of four welcoming a new baby (you might not notice at first, but the mother is pregnant on the title page), moving to Friday evening Shabbat and a trip to the synagogue. The reader goes through that child's first year, with the family celebrating each of the various holidays set within the changing of the seasons.The book closes with yet another mention of Shabbat, this time with a sunny Saturday afternoon picnic and finally the setting sun and a celebration of life in general. The rhymes are fluid and pleasant to read out load. After the story are a couple of pages describing each custom and holiday in more detail. Last of all are several pages of recipes and crafts, each with its own illustration. Recipes include: a noodle kugel for Yom Kippu break-fast, an edible sukkah, an edible Torah, Chanukah latkes, and a Land of Milk and Honey Shavuot milkshake. Crafts include: a welcome home banner for a naming cement, a Shabbat challah cover, Rosh Hashana New Year's cards, directions for growing a parsley plant for Tu B'shevat, a grogger (noisemaker) for Purim, and Passover Seder plate placemats. A gem of a book that Jewish families with pre-K aged children would appreciate.

I realize this is a childrens' book, but it really didn't go into much explanation about Jewish Holidays. The section in the back has activities, projects and recipes for grade-school children, but the text is more a preschool level. However, the format of explaining the holidays as they came up over the course of the baby's first year was very clever, and the illustrations were beautiful.

I'm always looking for books for my Jewish library. This one is quite lovely with the explanations and illustrations.

This is a beautiful book! It has been a joy to learn about the Jewish holidays through my daughter who attends a Jewish preschool and this one caught my eye in the temple library. It is beautifully written and illustrated - I particularly love the art work - heartwarming and colorful. It's the perfect gift! I am purchasing it for friends whose wedding I attended for their first child - I cannot think of a more ideal gift and hope the new parents and little bundle of joy will enjoy it with more siblings to come in the years ahead, G-d willing. The author and illustrator have done outstanding work and deserve to win medals.

Beautiful illustrations and a great way for kids to remember the rhythms of the Jewish year and traditions! Wish G-d was mentioned though.

There’s no way the average consumer can understand a LIRP. They are way too complex and convoluted so you can’t determine the true costs. That’s why insurance salesmen have to SELL it to you. His taxable bucket strategy doesn’t even discuss the HUGE tax advantages of long term capital gains. Probably because it competes with his LIRP he wants to sell you. I’ll give you the choice of following this “expert” or Warren Buffet. Warren says put your money in a passive S&P 500 index ETF and don’t take it out until you need it decades later for retirement. Even though we do this in a taxable account all gains are deferred just like a traditional IRA, but ONLY the gains are taxable when you take it out. Remember that taxable accounts also have no contribution limits, no RMDs, no 59 1/2 penalty, you can harvest tax losses, you can sell via tax lots. Since this “expert” gets to cherrypick his tax situations I will do the same. Invest your money in a taxable S&P 500 index ETF like Vanguard VOO which has an expense ratio of .04% which is almost 38 times less than the “experts” 1.5% fee for his LIRP. Over decades and using compounding this alone will result in HUGE savings. Do NOT use a mutual fund because they distribute capital gains at the end of each year. Only use an ETF in your taxable account. Dividends from this ETF will be taxable each year, but they are only 1.85% and are qualified so they are taxed at 0% or 15% depending on your tax bracket. Here’s one example of how you avoid all the long term capital gains in this taxable account resulting in 0% tax rate. You retire at 62 and you don’t have any earnings. You defer taking Social Security until 70 resulting in maximum benefits. You live off your taxable account resulting in long term capital gains. You sell via tax lots so you can determine exactly the amount of your long term capital gains. If you file married filing jointly you can sell $101,200 worth of long term capital gains resulting in 0% tax rate! Notice I did not say you sell $101,200 worth of the ETF. You sell as much of the ETF via tax lot that results in$101,200 worth of long term capital gains. As an example $200,000 of the ETF may result in $101,200 of long term capital gains so in reality you will be selling $200,000 and not $101,200 of your ETF. This example assumes the only taxable income you have comes from this taxable account. At age 65 your standard deduction goes up by $1300 so if you both turn 65 you can do $103,800 of long term capital gains. Even if you exceed these amounts you will pay only 15% tax on the excess. Since Social Security convolutes your tax situation I highly recommend you do this before taking it.If your ETF is worth $1,000,000 and it consists of $500,000 of long term capital gains you could do this for 5 years all at 0% tax rate! Should you sell $200,00 of your ETF even if you don’t need that much income for the year? YES! By doing so you will never pay taxes on those long term capital gains. Let’s say you don’t need any income for the year. You still sell $200,000 of the ETF so you can get 0% tax rate on $101,200 of long term capital gains and you immediately go out and buy $200,000 of the same ETF to continue deferring. This effectively raises your cost basis on this $200,000. Some will say what about the wash sale rule? That ONLY applies to losses not gains. If you doubt what I am saying then enter this tax information that I have presented into a 2018 tax software program and let it tell you the answer. I am sure you will trust it more than me.

I thought this book was great...until I realized that it ignores the 10% and 15% tax rate brackets.A large portion of the book tells you that if you are going to have more income than your standard deduction/exemption in retirement you do not want to have any tax deferred money like a 401K. He explains that when it comes to the money you want to invest, if you are paying a 25% Federal tax rate now, you will likely be paying at least a 25% rate in the future and when you do the math both a 401K and a Roth IRA would come out the same. Thus he says you should generally choose a Roth type of investment because taxes are likely to be higher in the future and if they are even 1% higher you will come out better off.I pulled out the actual tax tables and materials from last year. I quickly realized that for many people the money you are currently investing in a 401K may in fact be taxed at the 25% federal rate like the book provides in most of its examples. However, I also quickly realized that for many people when they go to take distributions in future years they will never go above the 15% rate. Thus, if tax rates did not go up a person in this situation should be better off with the 401K. Even if they did go up, they could go up from 15% to 25% and just make it back to the rate currently being paid.In all fairness the author does say that whether or not you should invest in a Roth over a 401K comes down completely to whether or not you will be paying a higher tax rate in the future. The problem is that all the examples and illustrations are situations where you are paying as high or higher a tax rate in retirement. He never talks about the fact that a tax rate exists that is lower than the 25% but higher than 0%. But I believe a lot people in retirement will end up in one of these brackets when they were in a higher bracket while working.I do also have to add that in some cases it might be better accepting the higher 25% rate now with a Roth rather than paying 15% in the future on a 401K distribution if that allowed you to avoid paying any taxes on your social security. He explains in the book how you could do this if you do not have much regular or deferred income in retirement. I did not try to go through all those calculation to see when that would pay off because if you have any significant pension or other income it throws you out of that possibility.I originally started to give it one star because I felt it left out very critical information needed to understand. However, I changed it to two because it does give you a lot of information that is good...you just have to remember there is a 10% and 15% rate and figure out for yourself how those rates affect your situation.In all fairness,

I see this as an immediate opportunity to arrange my affairs over the next 7-8 years as taxes are guaranteed to go up as the current law sunsets at the end of 2025. This was wake up call for me, a boomer, who has the majority of retirement money in tax deferred 401(k) type plans. I fully expect Tax Rates to increase substantially to pay for the $20 Trillion of current debt and the debt of unfunded future Medicare liabilities.

I usually use Lonely Planet for all my trips, but this time I decided to try Frommer's. It wasn't bad--I like the idea of acknowledging which things are overrated or hidden gems, but the book was still a little dry for me. The hotels it lists are much more expensive than I was looking for, and the layout of the book makes it difficult to flip through for quick reference. It is the first edition though, and maybe the second will be a little better.

If you have the time to educate yourself before your trip this is an approriate guide. If you are a last-minute person and you want to whip something out of your pocket while you stand in the middle of Marrakech wondering what to do, find something else. We read some of it before we left and did some preparing the day before we were to visit a specific city, town, or region, and that worked for us.

I received the book in OK condition. I wouldn't quite say it was in "good" condition. It had been a library book (stamped as such) that the buyer apparently bought from his/her library so it had clearly been through many hands and it showed somewhat in the condition of the book. It was difficult finding this- as I believe Frommer's hasn't published a new one in a few years- so I was happy to receive it.

Of the three major guides that we looked at, in retrospect, this was the most concise and useful for our purposes. It was used mostly for information on what to see, and how to get there. We don't use these books for seeking out where to stay or eat, but for what we needed this was the most useful.

As a traveler. I always buy books before I visit a new country. This book was just what I wanted to learn about Morocco.Full oof interesting and helpful info for a great trip.

One of the most fascinating books I've ever read. Not only is the story of Mr. Hunter, himself engaging, but the entire period in which he lived is truly remarkable. Hunter was obsessed with the workings of the body and that obsession drove him to constantly experiment, even on himself, to seek out knowledge about the human machine. Consumed by his quest, Hunter wasn't afraid to go to extremes, ethics be damned! Hunter's story, beyond the body, are of equal interest as London was in a turbulent period as was Hunter's relationship with his brother. Wendy Moore writes the story with just enough balance between Hunter's medical career and his personal life. It is well written and easy to read, yet intelligent and thought-provoking.

This extraordinary book is a gift to anyone interest in an engaging story, a reading difficult to stop. Also very appealing to learners because the true-to-life plot traces a lifeline of conquests for the science of medicine. John Hunter, unfortunately little known, did with his dissections what Vesalius left untouched: link the structures with function and disease at a time when there was practically no medical science. In fact surgery developed from the good old common sense of cutting, and sewing. But Hunter moved to experimentation and had the courage and daring to face the immense and backward medical establishment. I learned that one of the champions of medical treatment, Edward Jenner, the inventor of vaccination, was one of his favorite pupils and learned from Hunter how to advance biological knowledge. Thousands of others were also inspired by Hunter's approach to medicine and biology. His immense interest in comparative anatomy led to a spectacular museum of animal and human material. Additionally, she presents us the blunt, honest, generous man, devoid of small vanities, always curious to phenomena, always ready to share his knowledge and discoveries. Parkinson, who described the shaking palsy, also was an avid listener to his courses. The encounters with great men like Hume, Benjamin Franklin, Adam Smith, his colleagues at the Royal Society, color his life and times. The text is extremely well researched but Wendy Moore never failed to merge harmoniously all that information in a text that flowed effortlessly. Nevertheless the writing is sofisticated. Not being a native to the language, I was frequently meeting new words and running for the dictionary. What a book, what a life! We own that to Wendy Moore.

I found it fascinating that the early studies of anatomy were done using cadavers that had been taken from their graves! Had they not acquired these specimens to learn from, modern medicine would have been even farther behind! John and William Hunter taught students anatomy and medicine, and the earliest anesthesia was simply wine in the hospitals...but eventually advanced to the use of ether and other anesthetic, making surgery easier on the patient and doctor alike. A very enlightening read!

This book was a wonderful surprise. I like historical biographies. Especially those pertaining to individuals who were pioneers of one subject of science or another. I didn't really have an interest in surgery per say, but the description of the book caught my interest. I am glad it did. John Hunter was so much more than a pioneer surgeon. His life story is captivating to say the least and my highest praises to the author, Wendy Moore, for bringing the story to life. My only caution to readers is that if you are an animal lover, some descriptions of John Hunters experiments may be a bit tough to stomach. A great book. I highly recommend to anyone who enjoys meaningful biographies.

I am a neurointerventional surgeon. That means that most of the time, I use an x-ray machine to navigate a thin tube, called a catheter, through the vascular tree, usually to get inside the head, and almost always starting in the leg. Once there with it, I do what I went to do--be it treating an aneurysm, blocking off the blood supply to a tumor, or closing off abnormal blood flow through an arteriovenous malformation. We also treat crushed vertebral bodies with acrylic cement that hardens to...Corian.What would John Hunter have thought?In Hunter's 18th century, what passed for chemistry still held to the concept of "vitalism," the notion that any organic compound had to be made in a living organism. Frederick Wohler's synthesis of urea, which disproved that, happened exactly 100 years after Hunter's birth. Make an acrylate? Never happen. See through a body to diagnose what's wrong with it without opening the patient? While he's still alive??? Roentgen didn't even make the first x-rays until 1895, 102 years after Hunter ~died.~And yet...what has to be the very best line in Star Trek IV is Bones' plea to Kirk. Chekov has been injured and has an epidural hematoma. He is about to be operated upon at San Francisco General Hospital. McCoy's deciding plea is, "Jim, we can't leave him in the hands of 20th century medicine!"Every doctor I know howled with laughter at it--because we know how true it is. We have the best that we have, but 25 years from now, it will probably look pretty primitive. What I do didn't even exist when I was in medical school.What would John Hunter have thought?

Body snatchers, cadavers, surgery, I didn't think I could/would curl up and read this kind of book. Like exploring a deep cave, I cautiously started reading the book and before I knew it, I had already wandered far beyond the book's entrance and became totally absorbed in Wendy Moore's book. Excellent book about the early efforts in surgery. Albeit I occasionally grimaced from reading about doing surgery without anesthesia.I truly enjoyed the book. Recommend this book to anyone with a curiosity about surgery in the early days.
