About the Author

Before suffering a sudden case of adult onset deafness, John J. Geoghegan served as Vice President, Global Sales and Marketing for LucasArts, the videogame division of LucasFilm. Prior to joining Lucas, Mr. Geoghegan spent fifteen years managing advertising agencies for such publically-held communication companies as Saatchi, IPG and WPP where he worked in New York, Tokyo, Seoul, Bangkok, and San Francisco. Today, Mr. Geoghegan specializes in reporting on unusual inventions that fail in the marketplace despite their innovative nature. He coined the phrase "white elephant technology" (WETech) to describe these inventions and his articles on WETech have appeared in the "New York Times" Science Section, WIRED, "Popular Science," "Smithsonian Air & Space," and the "San Francisco Chronicle" Sunday Magazine among other publications. Mr. Geoghegan is also author of "Operation Storm: Japan's Top Secret Submarines and Its Plan to Change the Course of WWII" (Crown 2013). OPSTORM tells the true but little known story of Japan's fleet of underwater aircraft carriers purpose-built to launch a surprise attack against New York City and Washington, DC as a follow up to Pearl Harbor. "The Wall Street Journal" called OPSTORM, "a fascinating, meticulously researched, and deft account." Mr. Geoghegan began his journalism career as a Special Correspondent for the "New York Times," and currently serves as Director of The SILOE Research Institute's Archival Division in Marin County, California.

I have known John since high school. I always appreciated his droll wit, his optimism, his energy, and his beautiful way with words. I often visit Amherst with my wife and children, and, whenever I do, I reminisce with them of chatting and laughing with a young and ebullient John Geoghegan; and then to me those happy hours, those golden days of youth, all come alive again.Had I never met John, the captivating allure of his writing would have drawn me into an intimacy with his doubts and defeats, his courage and his victories, as if I had known him forever. This book is worth savoring. Once I started reading it at dawn yesterday, I did something I almost never do – I played hooky from work and let it captivate me from cover to cover.John’s literary style, by itself, makes the book delightful. A great writer makes you unaware of his style, and John does that. You feel like you are walking with him not just through a film, but through a series of evocative paintings, limned with colors that range from the dull gray of a frowning monsoon to golden shafts of delight. John reminds me of Flaubert – you will not find the same adjective or phrase ever on the same page. This takes meticulous work, and its effect is to lure the reader fluently along, like a leaf spinning in a brook. This is an autobiography so honest that sometimes you blush – as if seeing an innocent aspen stripped of its bark. But you admire John’s audacious candor. I have often contemplated writing my autobiography, believing that the trials I have endured would stagger humanity. But for sheer humanity staggering, my trials yield, tugging their forelocks in humble respect, to the trials that John Geoghegan has faced and overcome. If, perhaps, the events John describes are unlike the events of your life, still you know you have had similar episodes that have evoked similar feelings. I am sure we all have had SLMs, as John defines Self Loathing Moments. The way John walks you, as if you were his twin, through his hopes and fears, pitfalls and climaxes, arouses introspection a resolve to be as good a person as you know he wished to bring himself to be.John didn’t have good sibling relationships. But after reading this book, I feel I wish I could have been his brother. I think you will feel the same. And to feel that is a feeling worth having. Because if you believe there are too few brothers in this world, probably that is because you think there are too few people willing to share your burdens. But if you are willing to help shoulder the burdens of others, you will never, in this world or the next, run out of brothers.I marked a few happy phrases in the book that particularly amused me:• Turning around LucasArts was like changing a tire on a car going sixty miles an hour.• She radiated a feeling of not-wanting-to-be-here like heat off asphalt.• She barely weighed 100 pounds, most of it Makers Mark.• My father practically invented the “f” word.• For someone who wanted to be a good person, it’s amazing how bad I felt about myself. So, here’s to you, old crumpet! Well done!

Tragedy never comes at a good time. Least so when the stars are shining brightly and the planets are all turning in the right direction. And yet, that is almost always when it happens. To all of us. Geoghegan’s tale is familiar in many ways — the trauma, the coping, the despair, and the inevitable rise from the ashes —but the story is singularly his. Riveting from the get-go, the author takes us on a journey he never expected to write, but one that will undoubtedly touch the most hearts. Bravo for his bravery in putting pen to paper to share his amazing story of surviving in a new world.

As someone Deaf since age ten and keenly aware of the need for books that describe the unique experience not only of being Deaf but the even more prevalent and considerably complicated experience of being late deafened, I read this book with great interest. I was not disappointed. The book is written with honesty, humor and some strikingly accurate analogies. It is also a book that knows what it doesn't know, and says so. As a newcomer to the Deaf world and all its many permutations, Geoghegan acknowledges not only his own initial prejudices but his growth and the ways in which his journey could have been different, and perhaps easier, had he been steered a different way (i.e. towards the Deaf community, rather than away from it.) This burgeoning understanding of his is of vital importance to readers and adds a deeper dimension to an already intimate and well-told, wildly surprising at times, story.Among the topics touched on here are Japanese culture, parenting, divorce, depression, career choices, sex (of which there is quite a lot!) cochlear implants (and why these are NOT as sexy as they are made out to be by large corporations and the medical industry,) and becoming physically deaf while culturally hearing, in a very hearing world. To me one of the most striking things about the book is the way in which his experience of being deaf was used against him both by the outer world and internally, and how readily the source he went to for help referred him to amplification (cochlear implant) rather than enlarging his social and linguistic options (aka meeting other deaf/late-deafened adults and learning ASL.) It says a lot about the ignorance and narrow-mindedness of our society, and it is to his credit that he recognizes this. I found this book an easy, rollicking, enjoyable read, and highly recommend it.

This is a story about bravery, vulnerability and blowing up every facade imaginable. It’s a riveting read. It’s heartbreaking, painful & harrowing. It’s also hopeful, hilarious and heroic in an unexpected way. I commend the author for his courage to tell the truth about life’s messy journey. I wish him the best on the road ahead. I thank him for opening my eyes about hearing loss. I promise never to say, “never mind” ever again.

If you have yet to purchase John Geoghegan's recent memoir release, "Hear Today, Gone Tomorrow, A True Story of Love, Hearing Loss, Heartbreak and Redemption", I implore you to get your copy immediately. Geoghegan delivers a raw, no holds barred and insanely honest account of his grappling with adult life, while losing his hearing. "Hear Today..." will make you smile, will make you sad and more than once, you will have you blurt out loud, "Oh my God!". Through all the wonderfully written pages, Geoghegan shares an incredibly candid insight of a man with courage, many flaws, humor and persistence. With every turn of a page, I found myself rooting for him to make it. Times are different for Geoghegan now and I'm still rooting for him!
