From the Back Cover

Nan Graham, commentator for WHQR, NPR's affiliate in Wilmington, NC, teacher and author of In a Magnolia Minute: Secrets of a Late Bloomer and bestseller Turn South at the Next Magnolia: Directions from a Life-long Southerner, says, "Karen is very funny and a very good writer! (I love that she calls the departing son Spawn!) The drawings are really clever and the diagrams of the shifting emotions humorous and spot-on. It certainly seems to be an area that can use insight in managing the complexities of the single life for the more (dare I say) mature woman since the forum for singles in their 20s is certainly plentiful and excessive. Karen has a light and easy touch which surely makes her a natural connecting to other PSMers." Lisa Cook, author of 187 Things Teenagers Should Know Before Leaving Home says, "It's so real and alive and so many women will be able to relate to Karen's story. ANY mother who has been single and wanted desperately for her kid(s) to know what she went through at this turning point in her life will appreciate her words! I felt like I was right there with Karen on every page, thinking about how I coped during each stage of post-single motherhood. I can't wait for my children to read this and finally understand the years they didn't understand me!!" Brice Elizabeth Watson, Curator of the Dodekapus Art Collective in Atlanta, Georgia, says, "We displayed Karen's selections about Post-Single Motherhood in our 2011 I Can Dream All Day show and received rave reviews. Her work is emotional, witty, real, and relatable. I, for one, have only laughed out loud at David Sedaris before reading her writing!"

I found this book on a perfect night, as I was getting ready to settle into my couch and cry my eyes out. I sat alone in my living room with my teenager's baby blankets as they headed out for the night. I was feeling so alone and without purpose. I cried, I laughed but most of all felt a sense of peace. I have never been one to give into sentimentality ( at least not in public...) but this book opened some wounds and then offered the real life experiences. It was a godsend for that day and I will let my teens read it. I will get them a copy and have them refer to it if I ever act like a stalking psycho mom LOL. LIFE SHOULD BE SEEN AND APPRECIATED WITH HUMOR. I'm still working on the friend thing though, although I don't consider myself antisocial I much prefer solo activities and have low tolerance for whiners. I will give it a shot though.

This is an easy reading. Very well written, perfect amount of funny and sad.. It made me go back to those years of being a single mom and then made me understand all those crazy feelings when the kids are gone. It describes exactly how I felt when I got to my home and I was no longer a "Mom", weird that it was someone else writing how I felt. I recommend this book to any single mom whose kids are in high school or just went to college. It will help you understand that what you are feeling is normal and only another post-single mom could understand. It will also help you to get out of those feelings and begin to "enjoy" your new found and unwanted freedom.

This book was just what I needed. I have struggled for years and this book gave me the courage to just let go. I laughed along and agreed with so much that she wrote about. I lived all of it. With that said, I am moving away and starting new in 4 short months. Can't wait for my new life, and my new me!

I rarely write reviews because I'm rarely compelled to. However...I discovered this book 1 year into post-single momhood; after trudging through one of the hardest years of my life. Karen is exactly right, there is no comparison between an empty nester and a single mother. Oh how I WISH I had discovered this book on day one. Not only did she speak to EXACTLY what I feel (and a lot of what I said), I cried in some places and laughed out loud in others. Literally. I don't think I've ever laughed while reading a book!If I had the money to figure out make "Diary of a Post-Single Mom" available to every single mom navigating the balancing act between the pride and grief that accompany this transition - I absolutely would. Thank you so much Karen for speaking into my heart exactly when I needed it. You saved my sanity. Thank you!

This is the first book of it's kind, the first to dive into this expanding phenomenon of "empty nest" as it relates to single parents. I know because when my last son was leaving I searched the web and local community resources for any group or book to give me a pat on the back,or a joke, to guide me through, and there was nothing. That's when I "met" Karen online as she was setting up her meet-up group, and defining the term PSM, and assigning it stages. In this book, she tells her story with honesty, and humor, and all through she reminds you that it's her story and you have yours, but the common ground is the experience of having single handedly raised a child or children. Then if you have done it well, they get independent and leave you standing on the brink of a redefined you, and it happens faster than you can imagine when you are deep in the teen years wishing for a break.Read this book;it's the hug you are hoping to get.

SUCH a help. The only thing I don't like about it is the author refers to her son throughout the book as "Spawn." I do not like that AT ALL, humorous as I'm sure the author intended.

Great read, humorous and touching.

This was a book my daughter won on the Goodreads First Reads giveaway and suggested I read. I really didn't have any expectations, so imagine my surprise when I found I loved Ms. Rutherford's writing style and read through the book in a few hours.I don't give 5-star ratings lightly, but this book was so funny, so full of wit and charm, and really provided such good advise that I can't give it less. Although I'm not single, I have experienced my grown children leaving the nest (although a few have returned since then), and I really understood what Ms. Rutherford was talking about. This is, first and foremost, a very funny book -- anyone can read this and get some laughs. Her description of coming to grips with her son (referred to only as "Spawn") becoming a teenager, getting his driver's license, and ultimately going to college and moving away from home was simultaneously hilarious and heart rending. As Spawn packs his room and sorts his possessions into "trash" and "donate" piles, he refuses to let her help: "I can make faster progress without you." Yes, I could have too, Buddy. You've dragged me down for years. I could have been somebody. As if.Her take on organization: I was in denial (again) about the reason behind the process, because, frankly, I get damn near giddy around organization. I love, I love to think about it, make lists about it, do it, watch it, you name it. I'd roll around in it if I could, but that would defeat the purpose.Ultimately, this book contains some very good life advise from a woman who single-handed raised and supported her son, sending him on to college, and from there to a rewarding career and, hopefully, happy life. And she did it all with humor and grace. Kudos to you, Ms. Rutherford, and thanks for the terrific book.
