I bought this book long ago (before it was a "new expanded edition") for my first baby. I then used it for the next 3 children. I appreciated feeling empowered being able to put together food for my child instead of feeding jar after jar of store bought baby food. I loved knowing which recipes I could freeze. I would make a large batch, freeze, and then pull out what I needed. Some reviewers have said the recipes seemed exotic. I am not a health-nut, nor a culinary guru. But I did make recipes that had "unusual" ingredients. Most everything can be found in any grocery store. Occassionally something was out of the ordinary (I believe Annabel Karmel is British - hence the use of some unfamiliar veggies). I used mangos, kiwis, papaya, parsnips (none of my kids liked those), leeks. I used things I might not have used without this book. All the pages are splattered from being used so often.With that said, the book has recipes up to age 5. I rarely made any of the recipes after the 18 month section. It's strength is in the 4-12 month range of foods.I give this book a lot for baby showers.

The book looks great and I really like some recipes. This is a great source of ideas and if you're not familiar with a certain product that's where you can find a child friendly recipe. But in my opinion there is too much cheese in this book. Pretty much every other recipe contains this product. While I find cheese delicious, I don't think putting my 10 months old on a cheese diet is a great idea. A child should learn how to love food without cheese or ketchup or pasta. In Europe kids are not given cheese with every meal and look at them, they have much healthier diets and are able to eat smth that is not mac'n'cheese or pasta or french fries in a restaurant.

I love this cookbook. I love cooking, though, and often prepare elaborate meals for my husband and I. I do not feel that 20 minutes of work to make nutritionally dense food for my 8 mo. old is excessive. (She'll eat what I cook for two days so it's only 20 min. every two days)When she started eating more solid foods, she refused to eat plain steamed vegetables (pureed or not) and jar food. She put up such a fuss & refused to eat anything else besides fruit, string cheese or puffs. Not an optimal diet for a growing child. Naturally I was concerned because she used to eat a plethora of pureed foods (most were recipes from this book). I went back to the book to get recipes for 9 mos & up and it worked. She eats vegetables & anything else again. The recipes from this book are actually palatable to her. She loves to eat the food I make for her!As somebody who's done a masters in nutrition, I feel pleased with the diet I feed my child when I use recipes from this book. Yellow vegetables and cheese are so good for your growing baby. (There is a slight lack of green vegetables in the recipe but that is probably because they are less palatable; I often add mashed sweet peas to the recipes.) There is a previous review, however, that correctly mentions that fresh strawberries or eggs should not be fed to your child until he/she is one and there is a pureed strawberry recipe in this book. That's not approved by American pediatricians. Everything else, though, I have found to be good, sound advice.I highly recommend preparing your infant's food over jarred baby food and I highly recommend this book for that process. It is a little time-intensive but you don't have to cook every day. If you make extras, most of the foods are freezer-suitable even. I like that the microwave is left out of the cooking process in this book. Microwaving your food depletes it of anti-oxidant vitamins as well as other key nutrients. Overall, I think this book is an asset to people who want to prepare their baby's food. I don't know what my baby would eat if it wasn't for this book.I would like to add, now 4 months later, that my husband and I will eat her food some nights! Instead of freezing the the other portions, he and I will sit down and eat her food with her. Obviously, she loves it, but we're always surprised how good it tastes. I even used the california chicken salad recipe for a party I hosted...it was quick, easy, and very delicious.

I love a cook book with photos, and this book you'll love to look at, as well as your little one.It pushes beyond the normal American fare of chicken nuggets, pizza, fries...I've begun with the baby food purees... and worked my way up to one year.So it began with apples, pears, melons... potatoes, yams, peas... and was very helpful at coming up with ways to make proteins and vitamin rich veggies edible and interesting to young ones new taste buds. Variety, variety... This is a book full of great ideas... Macaroni and cheese made with carrots and pasta stars, fresh cheddar...I enjoy the fish recipes as well... Cod AuGratin, And Tilapia with Root Veggies... Purees for 8 month olds...I like how balanced this book is... it really pushes me out of the norm.I've learned about NEW ingredients that can quickly become staples in my diet as well. I had never bought a LEEK or a AVOCADO... but when a recipe called for an ingredient that I just couldn't fathom... I just left it out.CHEAP--- did I mention that these recipes are very inexpensive and help you control what is in the food your little one eats. ALL GOOD THINGS.TIME--- the time to prepare these meals is a concept you have to consider. Freezing a months worth of "Tasty Beef"... and always adding new side veggies... YES, there is a consideration about TIME.I got this book from the library... and decided to buy it.I am very pleased.
