Interesting, but hard to follow.

I wished this book was longer. The pictures were great and the story very interesting.

Great interresting story

My maternal grandfather was assigned to Attu during WWII. He was miserable there. He said the Japs could have it. I am excited to find these books about Attu so I have a better understanding of what his life was like during WWII.

Until I saw this book in a beautiful little museum in Homer, Alaska I had no idea that the Japanese occupied a portion of the Aleutian Islands during the second World War or that they took over 40 of the residents of Attu Island to Hokkaido, Japan and held them there until the war ended.Attu Island is in the Aleutian Island chain and called one of the "Near Islands". Supposedly, the islands are called "Near" because they are the islands closest to Russia. 500 miles from Russia, but 1,000 miles from the Alaska mainland and 1,500 miles from Anchorage.According to this book the Japanese had been unobtrusively scouting the Near Islands for years. The U.S. military knew and after Pearl Harbor told the Near Islanders that they would come to get them before the Japanese did. That didn't happen for a couple of reasons. One being that the man who was in charge of the radio on the island did not contact the U.S. Military. Nobody seems to know why and he was killed soon after the Japanese arrived.Much of the book was written by Nick Golodoff who was five years old when the Japanese stole his town. English was not his first language and when he sat down to write this book more than 60 years later there was a lot he didn't remember. He also didn't get any schooling until he was returned to Alaska when he was well into being eight years old. There are a lot of "I don't remembers" although some parts are filled-in by other members of the community who were also taken to Japan. This book is very short and not that easy to read, but the history recorded here is so important and so fascinating that I can't give it less than five stars. Now that I know a little about the history of this place I am very interested in learning more.

Coup loves the pumpkin product. We use it to help give her her pill too. It sure makes that easier!

Good Read. I like reading non-fiction books and never read anything about being captured in Japan during WWII. I can only find this book online and I was wondering if it is in stores?
