Before I bought this book I read many reviews on it. The majority of the reviews were positive, which caused me to feel as though i would probably like this book. I am a Twilight Zone fan and have been since I was a young lad back in the 1960s and 70s. I can't begin to tell you how many times I have seen each episode and many of my friends know that I am a kind of 'walking encyclopedia' of the show. But what I learned is that my knowledge of the show is pretty good for most people who know about the show and may enjoy it but really know very little about anything else. For a casual watcher I am a good resource of information. But when this book came in the mail from Amazon I was nearly stunned at what is contained within these pages. First of all, this book is massive. It's heavy and thick. There are about 800 pages (THIN PAGES!) to it. This book begins with background on Rod Serling's early years, Radio Scripts, his TV scripts from pre-TZ work, and lots of background information you probably never heard about before. When you get to the part about the Twilight Zone itself and its episodes, you get a breakdown of each season overall production costs, Bernard Hermann orchestrations, copyright registrations, dates of rehearsals of each telecast, dates of filming, scripts, the cost of each episode, the cast, music cues and trivia, everyone involved with it, a summary of the episode, the trailer script for the episode that you can watch if you have the TZ Definitive Edition DVD set, and lots of trivia and background information. Some episodes give you over 7 or 8 pages of information! It tells you when summer reruns aired, and much more than I can tell you here. You get a great deal of information in this book if that's what you really want.I would make a suggestion to you here: If you are a huge fan of this show and really enjoy knowing LOTS of information (Many call it 'useless information') then you probably would want to purchase this massive encyclopedia of TZ knowledge. You will know more about the show than anyone else you meet, unless possibly you are at a TZ convention somewhere and hook up with another TZ nerd! But if you are more interested in getting just some basic background on Rod Serling and how the show eventually got on the air as well as some information of the show and enjoy looking up the episodes to get some background info on some of the more unique episodes, I suggest you purchase 'The TZ Companion' by Marc Scott Zicree. Many people actually may have this since it also comes with the Definitive edition DVD set. Personally, I am glad I have both.Getting back to this book here, you will certainly have plenty of reading time with this book. I don't think there's a better book out there for HUGE fans of the show who want to know as much as they can about the show. It's a great reference book to read after watching an episode, too. I can't imagine anyone being displeased with the book after purchasing it other than saying it gives too MUCH information that you don't care about. So, choose your books wisely. If you can't get enough of the Zone, hopefully this is just what you need to satisfy your hunger for TZ knowledge! Finally, as a side note, if you really are interested in real TZ trivia, I would suggest the book 'Trivia from the Twilight Zone' by Bill Devoe. It really put me in my place about just how much trivia there is to the show that I can't tell you off the top of my head. I challenge anyone to get through this book without having to look up any answers, no matter how much you think you know about the show.
This book is a bit pricey, but is still a necessary edition to your "Twilight Zone" bookshelf. It serves as a biography of Rod Serling's writing career, and in addition to that is probably the most comprehensive compendium to date of information about the production of "The Twilight Zone" on TV -- accounting for every penny of production costs, and detailing changes in the script-editing process, helping us understand what was going on behind-the-scenes during filming and leading up to the final product for each "Zone" episode produced and aired. It even includes details for three scripts purchased but, ultimately, never filmed. However, be warned, this is not a book for the faint of heart or the casual fan. Grams has accumulated a wealth of paper documentation about Serling's early career and "Twilight Zone" itself, and much of the book -- even the several chapters' worth of biographical material -- cites to contracts and draft scripts and letters and telegrams verbatim. While Grams' book is a necessary addition to Marc Scott Zicree's "Twilight Zone Companion" -- Grams had all sorts of production papers that Zicree didn't have, and corrects some of the incorrect production-team memories that Zicree didn't know were wrong when the latter was researching and writing the earlier book 35 years ago -- it's not as fun a read as the "Companion". Grams often gets lost in summarizing legal contracts in such minute detail that you have to question whether or not he himself even understood the terms of the agreement. Zicree's book is more lively, as it weaves in memories and anecdotes and critical opinion. Grams gives you all the details; Zicree didn't have all those details, but did a better job bringing to life what he did have.Grams' book is more authoritative, but it's probably best used as a reference. Watch the episode, reading what Zicree had to say about it (which admittedly is often not much, especially if Zicree disliked the story), and then read Grams' more authoritative details about it. And then just watch the episode again.
As a long time fan of the series , I purchased this book and found it so interesting that I could not put it down.A large book it is filled with all kinds of information about the stories, casts and crew as well as the network sponsors and their role in the series. A must for fans of the series, Rod Serling and classic television.
