Herbie Hancock is an absolute legend, I highly recommend this book to anybody who is looking to develop what will feel like a personal relationship with this man. Well written, insightful, hilarious, full of stories and musical conquests. This book inspired me to do something new and different every day ( not only within my own music, but my every day life ), the perspective he developed through-out his career brought life changing revelations. What I am trying to say is if you are on the fence about reading this book, pull the trigger.... Herbie would. I have passed this on to multiple friends, they read it so fast I have it back within a week!

"Possibilities" is a great read into the life and challenges of a great person. Although I have known Herbie personally for 40 years, you never know the whole story. This book helped me understand his true greatness as a human being and an extremely talented musician. Herbie has opened up and shared his life of successes and failures. The good news is there are more successes than failures and he has achieved something that most human beings have the potential inside to accomplish, but have not tapped into it yet. He sets an example for us all to follow. Herbie..... thank you for allowing us into your world and seeing the possibilities that life has to offer. This is a must read for all who seek limitless potential and opportunities in life!

I have been a Hancock fan since 1969 when I first heard The Prisoner and I have felt since that time that he was the most inventive pianist/keyboardist of this time. I haven't always liked some of his compositions but few have his command of the keyboard or are as comfortable in many different types of music. I think his earlier compositions are better than his current output but no one can ever accuse Herbie of not being open-minded when it comes to music.The book was a good, easy read but then Herbie has given tons of interviews over the years and this book elaborates on many of those subjects. I'm really glad Herbie took the time to produce this book and I highly recommend it.

Herbie's memoir turns out to be a mixed blessing. He illustrates his early musical life and introduction to becoming a professional musician with fascinating candor. He comes across as rather self absorbed, a trait he gradually becomes aware of. The problem with the book for me is the point at which he becomes obsessed with every latest development in new technology. As he enthuses about this, page after page, the music seems to become of secondary importance. Where other musicians, like Dylan, Keith Richards and Neil Young, are rediscovering the virtues of 'old technology' in providing a more truthful account of their music making, Herbie seems to be caught in the thrall of the latest technological development or it's own sake. Perhaps his early engineering background is partly to blame. Despite my reservations this is a biography worth reading.

Even as a fan of Herbie Hancock's, you learn just how great and creative as a musician he is. This biography moves easily through his life stages and changes. A good deal of time is spent on his time with Miles and the influence throughout his career of that quintet.He deals with all aspects of his life and career including his Buddhist practice, his close relationships both in and out of music, as well as a candid view of his drug addiction.Overall, this is an open honest autobiography. Easy to read and full of history from one of the jazz greats.

I appreciated his almost entirely positive appraisal of other musicians, praising their talents and not passing judgment on their flaws. A real biography of a creative giant.Very interesting explanation of HH's working process and creative philosophy .I enjoyed that the author was determined to clear a path t'word self-improvement and although there were pitfalls along the way , he persevered .An uplifting story thats ongoing !Great fun to read if like me you have enjoyed and studied the artists work over the years !

This is great look into Hancock's music roots. This book explains what I hear when he plays what he plays--possibilities. I now can appreciate his far-out period as stretching for possibilities. He was/is not afraid to explore and seems aware when he has plateaued, but from there he looks for even more possibilities.
